The last few years have been rough for the economy and spending your life savings on gas isn’t the way anyone wants to spend their money. People have had to come up with creative ways to save money, and gas is an easy way to do it. People have adapted from driving their big gas guzzler SUV’s and trucks and switched to more practical, economy cars that save them a ton of money in the long run on gas.
Recently i have seen more and more hybrid cars driving around town, especially the Toyota Prius. I was in southern California this past summer and i was shocked to see how many people were driving them. I’m pretty sure i could see at least three Prius’s at all times. Not even kidding. It was insane. So what is the big deal? Why are so many people getting a Prius? Is it really that great of a car?
Well i have done my research and i have found that people have great reason to buy a Prius. Here are a few reasons i found that it is worth getting:
- It is reasonably priced for what you get. The 2011 Toyota Prius is selling anywhere from $21,000 to $28,000. That is around the same or just a little bit higher than other economy cars like it. So it’s not like you are spending a lot more money to get a hybrid car than you would a regular economy gas powered car.
- GAS MILEAGE. The Prius gets amazing gas mileage. According to this website the Prius gets an average of 50 miles per gallon (51 in the city and 48 on the highway), plus you can drive 606 miles before you have to fill up. Compare that with the a gas powered Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla that get around 25 miles per gallon around town and around 35 miles per gallon. I would take the Prius any day of the week. Road Trips just got a lot cheaper!
- Driving in the HOV (carpool) lane. Depending on what state you live in, you could be allowed to use the HOV lane even if you are the only person in the car. The lucky people from Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida and Georgia are allowed because those states have passed legislation for single passenger cars to drive in the HOV lane. Massachusetts and New york are in the process to get similar legislation.
- They look good! The Prius has a distinct look that i have grown to love. Even though they seem like they are super small, if you have ever been inside one you will find that they are very roomy. There is a big trunk and lots of leg room. Plus if you go to Toyota’s website you will be able to see that the Prius can have a bunch of sweet features like the Solar Roof and a Complimentary maintenance plan with roadside assistance. They have also expanded the original model to make the Prius V which is even bigger and has more trunk space.
If that is not convincing enough for you, you can also look and see that the Toyota Prius has been named the 2011 best overall value of the year in it’s class by IntelliChoice.
